Lillie Mae Russell was a Lindale community leader, educator and the first lady trustee of the Lindale Public Schools system.
She was born on December 18, 1883 in Lindale. She went to Lindale High School, graduated from San Marcos College – which became Southwest Texas State, now Texas State University at San Marcos. As a teacher and trustee of Lindale Schools she was a trailblazer in the education system here in East Texas.
Mrs. Russell – known as Ms. Lillie to everyone in Lindale instilled in her children, her grandchildren and the Lindale community the value of education and reading. Lindale Library is named in her honor so her story can continue to inspire, motivate and encourage learning in the Lindale community.
